What to Expect in This Course
Course Introduction
According to a 2018 Forbes article, "two-thirds of American adults cannot pass a basic financial literacy test". The article also provided four (scary) statistics that highlight the need for greater financial literacy in the United States.
-
44% of Americans don't have enough cash to cover a $400 emergency
-
43% of student loan borrowers are not making payments
-
38% of households have credit card debt
-
33% of Americans have 0% saved for retirement
Financial education does not guarantee you will avoid debt, but it does give you the knowledge and tools needed to manage spending, pay down debt faster, and increase savings and investments. Without this knowledge and the framework to create a financial plan you may never reach your financial goals and will continuously struggle to build wealth.
At the beginning of my teaching career I attended a career and technical education (CTE) conference. The keynote speaker was James Cunningham, "The Funny Money Man". He broke personal finance and wealth building down into three simple steps which I used to structure my course. I added a fourth step "protect what you own" to cover insurance basics. Each step is a unit of learning where I'll go over the foundations you'll need to become financially independent.
-
Know your cash flow - Budgeting
-
Control what you owe - Debt
-
Invest your dough $ - Investing
-
Protect what you own - Insurance
